"There is you, and there is me. But together, there is us. And that's the best part of me."
I had the best time with these three at one of my very favourite parks in here in Adelaide. Lily is the sweetest, with such a big personality and the most doting parents. I felt lucky to just be able to capture what they don't get to see.
I drove home in the dark on Saturday night, winding down the freeway with some Fleetwood Mac. I like to use that time to breathe and reflect. After 10 hours on your feet, and throwing yourself in the thick of such an emotional day, it's always a favourite time of mine. As I thought about the day, I remembered for the thousandth time that this job is unlike any other. It is an honour, not a right. I'm invited into a couple's wedding. These two made me feel like family, and I genuinely loved spending their day with them. How did I get so lucky?
This is just a tiny preview of the beauty to come from Jemma & Patrick's day at Maximillian's Restuarant here in Verdun, South Australia.

When I was first 'starting out' in photography, I used to style my own shoots for fun. My friends and I would pick out pretty faces, source clothing from boutiques around Adelaide, and travel to a location spend the afternoon shooting somewhere. Those photographs are actually still pinned to my bedroom wall, because god, they were some good times. Those photographs also serve as a daily reminder that this began as a hobby for me and it's where my heart is. I didn't set out to make a photography a career, I fell in love with it. That's incredibly cliche, especially for 2pm in the afternoon, but it's true all the same.
This leads me to a point, I promise. What I'm focusing on at the moment, is keeping the hobby aspect alive. I want to allow myself the time to photograph for fun, no matter how hectic things become. I want to allow time to fall deeper and deeper.
After Wednesday's shoot, I felt so completely invigorated and alive. I couldn't sleep that night or the night after. Every time I'd wake, I'd think of the photographs and I'd want to keep working. I'm a 8 hours-a-night sleeper, so this has taken it's toll but you know what? I am fine, I am so happy. I'll take the clumsiness & fogginess that comes with lack of sleep any day of the week if it means I feel as alight as I do after shooting something like this.
My deepest thanks to Anastasia & Caroline from Elly & Elm for bringing this shoot to life. Just before I went to Japan, I texted Anastasia a photograph I saw and loved. I said: "can we make this" and honestly, that's all I had to say. When I came home, it was done. These women are incredibly creative and hardworking. They have an eye for detail that I have yet to see anywhere else.
Thank you to Steph & Alex for volunteering your time to model for us. You were brilliant and I adore you both. And finally, thank you to our other talented vendors for your services. I have so much love for everyone, I feel like I might burst if I don't write it out here. So thank you!
